Memorial Day Weekend!

What are three great things about Memorial Day?

1. Warm weather (possibly)
2. Cook outs
3. A day off from work

Kelsey and I took full advantage of our Memorial Day weekend and my day off...

We started the weekend with happy hour at Toulouse Petit, a restaurant down the street from us that is centered around experiencing the French Quarter of New Orleans, and met up with my friend Genea from CHILD. Fried green tomatoes, fried okra, red beans and rice, spicy lamb sliders, and asparagus spears with bĂ©arnaise are some of our favorite under $5 choices. Toulouse is kind of our "swanky" joint...where we like to go to make ourselves feel kind of fancy. They have an expansive cocktail menu that my brother-in-law, Eric, beamed at when he visited.

After a drink and some food we strolled on over to the Seattle Center for the first evening of Northwest FolkLife Festival! Genea invited us to hear a band called Thadillac. Little did I know...just how funky this "jazz-funk" band was going to be. It was something else haha. We really did enjoy ourselves and watching the  diverse crowd form around the front of the stage and dance like they were each the only ones in the room. We ended up staying and listening to a second funk band...actually, a native american funk band, called "Little Big Band."

I spent all day Saturday at the Edmonds Market cooking pizzas and getting a little bit of a sun burn (I didn't think it was possible here). Kelsey came up to the market for the first time, took some pictures, and actually did some cooking! We got a little backed up, I asked if she wanted to help and she jumped right in! Slicing up pears and onions, garnishing pizzas, taking a few orders, and after the rush she cooked her first pizza in the oven! It's quite difficult to pick up right away, but after a few seconds of getting the hang of how to move the pizza with the peel she did a great job!

After the market we headed back out to a going away cookout for our friend Kyra, she is going away to work for the summer :-(. But we all took full advantage of an excuse to get together, sit around a fire, eat burgers, hotdogs, brats, and jello moldings, drink, and laugh.

Sunday, Kels and I took the day pretty easy but capped it off with our own little cookout at Alki Beach. We had a couple of bags of charcoil sitting in the car and decided to head out, nab a grill, and eliminate our remaining supply of smore's ingredients! Of course we had some chicken kabobs on the side. Of course there was no lack of adventure...it turned out to not be the warmest of days. Mostly due to some stiff wind, which of course made getting the filthy, run down, public grill, a pain in the butt. After realizing the charcoil was not of the "easy light" variety I was saved by the "Urban Market" across the street that happened to stock lighter fluid. The rest of the evening was a breeze as we enjoyed our food, chatted away, and tossed the softball in our patch of grass by the water.

Come Monday, we cooked a big breakfast and decided to really take full advantage of my day off by heading out of the city. We drove about 30 minutes out to Issaquah to hike Tiger Mountain! Actually, I lied. We didn't really intend to hike Tiger Mountain. But while searching for trails we came across a hike to "Poo Poo Point," I'm not kidding, that's actually what we found haha. Poo Poo Point happens to be located on Tiger Mountain where there are an abundance of trails. I'm not actually sure whether we made it to Poo Poo Point or took a side trail off somewhere else, but we hiked for about 4 hours, and made it home with enough time to cook a relaxing dinner and think about the weekend.

Here are some pictures from our hike:
